Is the Upper Limit Holding You Back ?

Is the Upper Limit Holding You Back

I notice that sooo many of you struggle with similar things. In particular: getting outside of your comfort zone & maintaining your goals.

And that’s a real problem if we wanna create momentum and massive change in our lives.

So let me ask you this: have you ever felt like you’re not good enough to achieve something? Or that you’ll mess up if you go after what you want?

Or maybe you’ve felt guilty or uncomfortable when things actually HAVE gone your way…. & because of this, you ruined it by returning to the negative thought patterns of how you’re not worthy or not enough?

Well, all of these things are caused by something called the ‘upper limit’.

What is the upper limit?

Most people go through life living entirely in their comfort zone. Even if they’re not entirely happy where they are, the familiarity of their lifestyle keeps them there.

Our egos & subconscious minds have convinced us that anything outside of our comfort zone is dangerous. So oftentimes, we don’t try to leave it.

But the problem is - the magic we wanna create, lies waaay outside of our comfort zone.

The career success, the abundance, the love you so deeply desire… it all exists on the other side of your comfort zone. It exists outside of your pre-programmed, personal limits.

So when we start stepping out of our comfort zones to make things happen for ourselves, our ego completely freaks out. And if we DO manage to push through that fear and actually achieve what we want, we often find ourselves subconsciously self-sabotaging.

Why? Because by achieving these things, we’ve hit the upper limit of our comfort zones.

Your ego is the little voice in your head that gives you those nagging negative thought patterns & criticism. It tries to pull us back down into our comfort zone when we reach the upper limit.

It convinces us to react or behave in a certain way… and in doing so, we return to where we were before.

You see: each of us has an internal thermometer for how much success, wealth, happiness & love we’ll let ourselves experience. That’s our upper limit setting.

And here’s the thing: most of us don’t feel truly ready to achieve the things we want yet because we haven’t programmed our mindsets or shifted our internal thermostat.

We say we want to create a business, launch a podcast, manifest our soulmate, or travel the world, but we still do all the things that hold us back from doing so because we’re scared and don’t believe it’s really possible for us.

And if we do achieve those things, we find ourselves falling quickly back into our old patterns. And guess what - this reinforces the belief that we’re not worthy of it.

Do any of these sound familiar?

  • You earn a load of money but can never seem to hold onto it

  • You’ve been offered a dream job but turned it down or quit within a few weeks

  • You constantly argue with your dream partner who you spent so long manifesting

  • You can’t stop snacking on sugary foods after weeks of super clean eating

  • You get sick just before a huge event or launch in your business

Yup - these are just some of the ways that the upper limit problem can manifest in your life.

Simply put - we self-sabotage.

How to overcome the upper limit problem

I love nothing more than supporting women as they build their self-confidence & self-belief.

My goal is always to empower YOU to take back the control. And it all starts with your mindset.

Fear always comes from our ego. It’s our protection mechanism and it will do everything gg it can to keep us safe from judgment or discomfort. But because so many of us were programmed from a really early age to play it safe, anything else becomes a challenge.

If you don’t believe you’re worthy of something. Or if deep down you think something bad might happen if you achieve your goals, you’ll sabotage your experience.

When things get dope & super amazing in your life, you can find yourself unconsciously sabotaging so you can drop back into the old, familiar place where you feel in control.

BUT - the good news is - we can overcome the upper limit problem and this is something I help my clients with.

Oftentimes our beliefs and the root causes of our sabotaging behaviors are deeply rooted into our identity and subconscious. So although we can’t always expect an immediate transformation, we can definitely chip away at the problem.

Steps to moving past the upper limit

If you’re not aware of the upper limit problem, it can be friggin’ hard to achieve (& stick with) any of your goals. You’ll simply believe that you’re not good enough and you’ll stop trying anything new. You might also convince yourself that you’re not capable of handling a big jump in success or happiness.

And that’s complete BS.

So, what can you do to start overcoming these limitations?

1. GAIN AWARENESS OF YOUR UPPER LIMIT

The first step with anything in mindset work is to simply become aware that the issue exists. Don’t judge yourself for it - just notice it. Journal how it has shown up in your life so far and make the conscious decision to work on overcoming it. You can also try meditating and sitting with your thoughts to help you start noticing your patterns.

2. MAKE FRIENDS WITH YOUR EGO

Our egos aren’t bad. They just wanna protect us. Show compassion & love to ALL the parts of yourself and remind yourself that you are always safe & supported in whatever you choose to do.

3. START INCREASING YOUR COMFORT ZONE

Do things regularly that make you feel a little uncomfortable. Get used to the feeling of a small bit of fear. Remind yourself that this discomfort will help you expand. It will prepare you for the big moments when you have the opportunity to reach even higher.

Sheridan Cotrell

I (Sheridan) used to be that visionary business owner with all the balls in the air. I had my master's degree in speech therapy and created a six-figure consulting business in that field. But I didn’t stop there. I created another six-figure business as a health coach, and then one as a business coach for good measure. But the whole time I was trading time for money. I worked a zillion hours a week. Don’t believe me? I have five kids, and in addition to the work stuff, I was an available and committed mother to my children – doing the laundry, ferrying them to activities, and on and on... By outward measures, I looked successful, but on the inside, I was mentally and physically exhausted. I had hit a ceiling in my income and every incremental increase required more from me. I was in constant striving mode, trying to push myself to constantly do more. Until it all fell apart (even typing that makes me quake remembering). I had a major health crisis that caused me to pull the plug on 95% of my business. Almost everything came to a full stop. Which was the best gift I ever received. You see, working hard and learning more skills is not enough. Heart, vision and best intentions are not enough. It’s embarrassing to admit, but I didn’t know what I was doing even though it looked like I did.
