How to Stay in Flow and Non-Resistance

Let me ask you - do you have a hard time staying present? Do you feel like you need to be in control all the time and find it difficult to achieve a state of flow? Are you constantly overthinking and obsessing about things that have happened in the past… or worrying about events that haven’t even happened yet?

If you feel any of these, then this blogpost is for you!

You may have heard that you achieve a flow state by finding your purpose and that when you do that, you get the key to happiness. I used to believe that too.

But I also believe that flow is all about living in harmony with who you are at your core. When you live in alignment with flow, you’re free to express the true you.

I made a conscious decision to flow through life.

You see, for a while I did what I thought was expected of me. Which actually looked like putting up a lot of resistance, trying to control everything, overthinking, you name it…

But then I decided enough was enough.

I chose to stand up for myself, create my own rules and follow them unapologetically. I realized what mattered most to me - and that’s how I decided to show up. I learnt to tap into my feminine energy and now I’m able to attract more things to feel joyful for each and every day.

I’ve let go of the overthinking, the overwhelm and the control. And I’ve made peace with the fact that I can’t control everything in my external reality, … because I know that I can control how I react to, or experience, these things instead.

By being conscious in this way, I have allowed my personal relationships to thrive and my business to grow exponentially.

I am fully in flow with life - the ups, the downs, and everything in between. Of course - being in flow doesn’t mean I don’t ever face challenges. But I’ve learned how to accept life for what it is and I allow whatever happens to move through me so I can enjoy living to the fullest.

So, how can you too get to this place of flow, peace and inner alignment?

Here are my 3 favorite practices to stay in flow and alignment, no matter what:

Stay Present

Getting into a flow state requires you to focus on your joy - all of which can be found in the present moment. Feeling resentful about the past, or worrying about what’s coming, keeps you from living in the present. So, practice being mindful each day and see how it shifts your focus from resistance to alignment and flow.

You’ve probably heard me talk about gratitude, too – and, trust me, it truly is the key to staying present. Gratitude helps you find what is meaningful in the small, but oh so meaningful moments of life and will make you vibe higher instantly.

Decide to go all-in

When you put all your effort, energy and enthusiasm into the activities you do, that’s when you're fully immersed. You don’t hold back, and you definitely don’t take shortcuts.

Giving your best to what matters the most leads you to more profound experiences and makes you appreciate them even more. You learn to be present, and you start prioritizing the activities and things that bring you joy - and thus, you release resistance.

But in order to get to a place where you’re able to immerse yourself fully in all the pleasures of life, you gotta make space for them to come in. And this means letting go of all the things that no longer serve you.

By letting go, we make space for what is meant to come to us. And when we’re in alignment, we’re naturally tuned into the energy of flow.

Let go of control

When we try to control all the outcomes in life, we end up stifling our creativity and spontaneity.

We are not meant to control the external world completely. We are here to experience life and move through it day by day - in whatever way it shows up for us.

When you allow yourself to let go of control, you’re able to tap into a whole new level of consciousness. You’re also able to adopt a child-like curiosity and fascination with the new things you are exploring.

And trust me - this means you’ll experience a lot more fun each day, too!

Start by being mindful - how often are you caught up in your thoughts? How often are you trying to control how your goals and desires will play out?

And how often do you allow yourself to simply drop into your body and experience the present moment without any lens of judgment?

Honestly – I used to resist and push A LOT. I wanted to make everything happen for myself and I believed that I needed to do absolutely everything I could to make things work in a certain way.

But truth is - the universe always meets us halfway. We can’t predict everything in our life. And it’s definitely not our duty to do this.

We are here to enjoy our life and show up each day as the highest version of yourself.

When I learned to release attachment to the outcomes in my life, everything that I was asking for started showing up - often in the most unexpected ways possible. And all without hustle and effort.

Living in alignment with the flow of life brings you more happiness and freedom than you could ever imagine.

Trust that the flow of the universe is always guiding you in the right direction.

Flow will get you places you never could.

Sheridan Cotrell

I (Sheridan) used to be that visionary business owner with all the balls in the air. I had my master's degree in speech therapy and created a six-figure consulting business in that field. But I didn’t stop there. I created another six-figure business as a health coach, and then one as a business coach for good measure. But the whole time I was trading time for money. I worked a zillion hours a week. Don’t believe me? I have five kids, and in addition to the work stuff, I was an available and committed mother to my children – doing the laundry, ferrying them to activities, and on and on... By outward measures, I looked successful, but on the inside, I was mentally and physically exhausted. I had hit a ceiling in my income and every incremental increase required more from me. I was in constant striving mode, trying to push myself to constantly do more. Until it all fell apart (even typing that makes me quake remembering). I had a major health crisis that caused me to pull the plug on 95% of my business. Almost everything came to a full stop. Which was the best gift I ever received. You see, working hard and learning more skills is not enough. Heart, vision and best intentions are not enough. It’s embarrassing to admit, but I didn’t know what I was doing even though it looked like I did.
